Petals from the Sky is the story of a women that is 30 years old and is deciding whether to become a nun as she has been preparing her whole life to do or to surrender to the complexities of the outside world by allowing herself to fall in love with a man.

I greatly enjoyed the story and the premise of the book. However, there is something missing here that prevented the book from touching the reader in a profound way. We see Meng Ning and are allowed to hear her thoughts and observations. Perhaps it is just because the character is at a cross roads in her life throughout the book and does not know until the very end what her thoughts and desires are.

I kept reading because I wanted to see what happened to Meng Ning but the journey was not as satisfying as I hoped.
