YA story set in 1144 about a teen-aged noble widow who goes on pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem because King Stephen of England wants to marry her off and she hasn't yet gotten over the plague deaths of her baby and elderly husband - and wants to choose her own partner this time.

Besides the mystery of a young Welsh woman who asks for her protection and can read her mind - and some very well developed other characters - the book seems to give a fair travelogue of a medieval trip from England to Jerusalem - with a stopover in Rome - of a rich young woman and her train of waiting women, armed guards, monks and guides. I really enjoyed it.
