I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel of pre-Colombian North America. The novel takes place around 1300 A.D. in the area around what is now the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The story is basically a murder mystery revolving around who killed a young maiden on the eve of her marriage and why. But along the way, the authors take you into the world of the Algonquin Independent villages to include the Native American religion and deities, superstitions, taboos such as incest, clan life, war with other nations, food gathering and preparation, coming of age rites, etc. In addition to the well-researched information on life in America before the Europeans, the storyline of the novel keeps your interest and was a good page-turner. I would highly recommend this one. I'll definitely be reading more of the Gear's prehistory series.

This is another great book by Kathleen O'Neal Gear and her husband, W. Michael Gear. Considering they are both professional archaelogists, they are also a couple of very good authors. You need to understand this book is a work of Historical Fiction but, at the same time, gives you a very good idea of what was going on in Paleolithic America. The story story line is extremely well written and takes you in starting with the Preface and ends when you finish the last page. Once you read one of the books in the series, if you like it, you will want to read them all! Lastly, the bibliography of the book is extensive in case you would like to learn more about something mentioned in the book.

All the books in this series are an excellent read, good story and lots of anthropological information. Each book stands alone but also continues a good storyline.

Very good book with interesting ancient American Indian lore. A good mystery with detective work similar to the present day's. A different, refreshing read.

If you love mysteries and are ready for something different this is the book. Set in the Chesapeake Bay area 600 years ago. Not your run of the mill slasher who done it.

A great prehistoric peoples novel about the Chesapeake Bay area in the 1300's. Well researched and facinating story about people of the Late Woodland era. A wonderful adventure into the past.

Eighth of the great anthropologically based series beginning with the settlement of the epi- glacial North American Continent and visiting tribal peoples over the next few thousand years. I loved them all.

" A first-rate murder mystery, anthropological information on pre-European Native America, a slight dash of sex(mostly innocent), and plenty of politics. Whew! The amazing thing is that it is all done so well."

One of the better books in an excellent series. A young woman is murdered as she tries to flee with her lover, rather than marry the man her clan promised her to. An old loner with a mysterious past comes to solve the crime and in the process reveals everyone's secrets.

Have read other books in the series, but this one was kind of confusing. Had to turn many times to map and organization of the tribes and geographical locations. Also googled for explanations of various terms not defined by the author
