I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel of pre-Colombian North America. The novel takes place around 1300 A.D. in the area around what is now the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The story is basically a murder mystery revolving around who killed a young maiden on the eve of her marriage and why. But along the way, the authors take you into the world of the Algonquin Independent villages to include the Native American religion and deities, superstitions, taboos such as incest, clan life, war with other nations, food gathering and preparation, coming of age rites, etc. In addition to the well-researched information on life in America before the Europeans, the storyline of the novel keeps your interest and was a good page-turner. I would highly recommend this one. I'll definitely be reading more of the Gear's prehistory series.

This is another great book by Kathleen O'Neal Gear and her husband, W. Michael Gear. Considering they are both professional archaelogists, they are also a couple of very good authors. You need to understand this book is a work of Historical Fiction but, at the same time, gives you a very good idea of what was going on in Paleolithic America. The story story line is extremely well written and takes you in starting with the Preface and ends when you finish the last page. Once you read one of the books in the series, if you like it, you will want to read them all! Lastly, the bibliography of the book is extensive in case you would like to learn more about something mentioned in the book.

Eighth of the great anthropologically based series beginning with the settlement of the epi- glacial North American Continent and visiting tribal peoples over the next few thousand years. I loved them all.
