Harvey Metcalfe is making his money the old-fashioned way: he swindles it out of people. It has served him well all his life - and being very careful about it, he has reached a comfortable, settled middle age.

The latest victims of one of his stock market schemes are an Oxford don, a doctor, an art dealer and a lord. They decide to get even and hatch an ingenious plan to relieve Harvey of the money he took from them, not a penny more, not a penny less. The next time Harvey vacations in Europe, the foursome is ready.

This is a very enjoyable read - there are a few occasions when the novel dates itself to the Seventies, but that is easily overlooked. Nice twist at the end, too. Jeffrey Archer is great!

(Unfortunately, my copy arrived with a water-damaged corner, which I only saw after I already gave credit to the sender, so I will not be posting it.)

This is one of the cleverest and most fun books I've read in ages. The separate victims of major stock fraud get together to get their money back by whatever means necessary. They hope to defraud the scamster of the exact amounts that were taken from them--not a penny more, not a penny less. Wonderful story.

This is a great read. Financial scams, revenge, plots, some humor. Jeffrey Archer is a great author and this is one of his early books, but just terrific. I recommend it.

This is a very clever book; certainly the premise behind the story is far-fetched, but that doesn't matter too much. A swindler steals a small fortune from a group of men who get together and plot to steal it back. No more, no less. The ways and means of the thefts are imaginative and often hilarious. And then the ending.....oh, you won't see that coming. Highly entertaining.

"One Million Dollars--that's what Harvey Metcalfe, with 25 years of shady deals behind him, has pulled off with empty promises of an oil bonanza and instant riches. Overnight the heir to an earldom, a Harley Street doctor, a Bond Street art dealer and a Harvard Fellow at Oxford find themselves at the wrong end of a masterfull million dollar swindle.

But this time Harvy Metcalfe has conned the wrong men. The band together and from the casinos of Monte Carlo to the high stakes windows at Ascot and the hallowed lawns of Oxford, Harvey Metcalfe is shadowed by these four unlikely conspirators as they plan to stin the crook for exactly what they lost. To the penny.

Good story about con men.

What a page-turner! Don't let the 1976 copyright deter you from this book. This is a great story of revenge and money. Four men are duped into a stock swindle, then conspire to get their money back. No violence or car chases, but it's chalk-full of quick thinking and well-planned schemes.

Loved this book! Archer at his best in a much shorter story than usual. Dynamite ending. This would make a great movie!!

Great story, with a surprising twist at the end. It was not at all what I expected.

Light-hearted "caper" tale.

When a multi-millionaire's manipulation of stock prices in a shell company he created specifically for that purpose results in several major investors being wiped out, they band together to get back the money they've lost -- not a penny more, and not a penny less.

Their sting operations may not be 100% believable, but it's an engaging read, anyway.
