This book is definitely worth a credit! Lorraine Heath has become one of my favorite historical romance authors. There's just a little bit *more* to her books, somewhat like Elizabeth Hoyt. This book has an original premise, great interaction between the H/H, and of course great passion. I gave it 4 1/2 stars, and the only reason it wasn't a 5 star for me was that I felt that the original conflict that had occured between the H/H was just a little bit too repititive at the beginning. But once the love story got cooking, I couldn't put it down!

A pretty good read, the storyline is more original than most of the other books, great characters and intrigue. Didn't lag and keep my interest.

Wow, I ALMOST gave this book a perfect 5 stars! In fact, by page 300, I was planning to place it on my Keeper Shelf. The first 80% of the book had an excellent story line with witty dialogue. In addition, the tempo of the growing romance between H/h was just about right. (I admit I am a sucker for the separated-then-reunited redemption storyline.)

Then, sadly, when the HEA ending was almost in sight, Ms. Heath pulled out not one, not two but THREE (3!) cliches to bring the story to its conclusion:
a) BIG Misunderstanding
b) Tragedy/Ultimate Crisis
c) Last Desperate Attempt by Predictable Villain

This combination caused me to change my score from 5 to 4--and prompted me to post the book to the next reader. I would expect a writer of Ms. Heath's talents to find at least one interesting twist. But, she's a favorite of mine so maybe my expectations were too high

Still, I give this book a very high score and highly recommend it. (I'll be interested to see if the ending causes a reaction from any other reviewers.)

Story number 1 in a trilogy. Set in London during the mid 1800s.

I don't enjoy stubborn, obstinante heros. His arrogance drove me crazy for the first third of the book. Then add to that the cheesy ending... I already have no. 2 in the series, so I am going to give that a go as I usually enjoy Lorraine Heath quite a bit, but I can't say that this was a favorite.

Although I prefer Ms. Heath's western historicals, I've always thought her regencies were rather bland; you know, starts off with a great premise, but somehow along the way just missing the mark of a really great story. And that's exactly what this one turned out to be. Good plot, but it could have been so much more! I liked Claire and Westcliffe together. They made the story enjoyable. There could have been deeper emotions displayed, however. But then the happenings towards the end just careened out of control (with one thing after another out of the blue) to a sloppy finish. Rather disappointing overall. 3.5 stars

Much as I generally enjoy Lorraine Heath, I had trouble with this book. The hero was really unlikable and Heath had him involved with another woman for half the book (only part of it was he actually sleeping with her, but he was still very much involved.) I understood, to a degree, his motivation for being a cruel jackass, but it just seemed like there was a terrible imbalance - his years of philandering and imprisonment of his wife for her one supposed infidelity. And then Heath had the heroine, Claire, repeatedly apologize and blame herself. I suppose that you gave to allow for the period in which the book was set, but to me, I couldn't enjoy these two as a couple when I thought him a her and her a doormat.
