The story follows the lives of childhood friends whove lost touch, but eventually find themselves in one another's lives again as adults. Both women are light-skinned African-Americans, but one has since pursued a life passing as a white woman. She married a white, racist man and she lives in a society that would no longer accept her if they knew the truth.

Running into her old friend makes her long for her roots. The story takes place during
the Harlem Renaissance and it is a quick, eye-opening read. I highly recommend this novel.
