Parallel Journeys
Author: Eleanor H. Ayer, Helen Waterford, Alfons Heck
FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck had radically different experiences of the Holocaust. Helen was interned in Auschwitz extermination camp; Alfons served in the Hitler Youth. Still, this book shows how they emerged with respect and empathy for each other.

This true story is riveting as it outlines a young Jewish woman's experience in WW2 and a young German boy who
was part of Hitler's youth. The chapters go back and forth between the two people. It really does an excellent job explaining how the German people grew to believe Hitler's
promises and to block out any indication of the horror that was happening as a result of Hitler's policies. It also explains what happened to both of these people after the war. It is an excellent book for high school and adults as well. I used this as part of a high school history study on WW2.
