A typical and excellent novel by this author. Takes place mostly in Japan, tale told by a woman whose oldest daughter has just committed suicide; causes her to reminisce about the daughter's birth; includes enigmatic tale about an odd friend and her daughter.

Creepy and intriguing. This book had me wondering what really happened for hours afterwards. A very different side of this author than in The Remains of the Day.

The eldest daughter of a Japanese woman living in England has committed suicide by hanging. It brings the woman back to events during her pregnancy in Nagasaki during the aftermath of the bombing and American occupation. This is an excellent first novel auguring the success of his later works. It is a must read if you have interest in contemporary literature.

A true gem of a novel by Ishiguro. Subtle nuances, a psychological study of characters in a peripheral view sort of way. As another reviewer stated, the ending and revelations will leave one wondering for quite a bit afterwards.
This work of Ishiguro's is seemingly one of the most understated that I've the pleasure to read; however, it is truly more complex than one could realise until the ending is revealed.
I find A PALE VIEW OF HILLS to be the pearl necklace of books-simple yet elegant. 5 Stars!

I cannot rate this book. I bought it for a class and never read it. I have had it for 4 years now and still have not read it.
