ISBN 157036026x - First off, you ought to know that this book comes with a cassette and, if you buy a used copy that doesn't come with it, you should demand a refund (materially different). I don't point that out to annoy anyone (like sellers) - I point it out because this is one instance that the recording really, really makes the book.

Told by the Pagemaster, this is the story of Richard. Richard is afraid of a great number of things. He finds himself, accidentally, in the library and in possession of a new library card. When Richard approaches the Pagemaster, all he wants is directions to the exit, which the Pagemaster provides. Following those directions, Richard meets Adventure, then Fantasy and even Horror. The group is swept along through various tales - Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Moby Dick, Jack and the Beanstalk and several others - before they're able to escape, thanks to the unexpected bravery of Richard. Finally reaching the exit, Richard and his new friends meet up with the Pagemaster again, who admits that he sent the boy through Fiction intentionally. Richard leaves the library with a new love of books, and his new friends.

Christopher Lloyd (Taxi, Back to the Future and, of course, The Pagemaster movie) narrates this exciting tale. Without his voice, just reading the book is a dull way to experience Richard's adventure through Fiction. The text is written in the first person and very clearly meant to be read; Lloyd is absolutely perfect for the part. The illustrations, by DiCicco Digital Arts and Len Smith, are superb. They're bright, colorful and capture the story vividly. This is no sleepy bed time story! The Pagemaster is exciting and fast-paced and, with any luck, will make your child curious about the classic books Richard comes across.
