Again, a beautiful story of Baum's fairyland - this time the Land of Ev, not Oz. We meet new characters (Billina the golden hen, Tiktok the mechanical man, and the Hungry Tiger) and reunite with old, familiar ones.

This time the characters team up with an absurdly-organized militia, in which one private is the only one doing any work, to free the Royal Family of Ev. Along the way they meet Princess Langwidere, who has many, interchangeable heads and not enough time (a matter of minutes, she freely admits) to govern the Land of Ev.

The Scarecrow has lost his good sense, it seems, because he gives much bad advise throughout this book. Fortunately his buddies compensate. He rivaled the Hungry Tiger for the funniest character. The tiger had no mental grasp of the concept of appetite and kept moaning about how he wanted to eat a plump baby but hadn't the heart to do so.

My daughters and I were disappointed that Jack Pumpkinhead made only a cameo and had no speaking lines. But his description of being "overly ripe" did make us laugh. Hands down he's our favorite character so far.

Overall, this gave us a lot of laughs and much to talk about. We're enjoying this series so far.

Great light reading, and a quick read too, even better than a mystery cozy. Of course, my problem now is where can I get a magic belt? Couldn't find it on amazon.

And I loved this passage at the end....

"That is the College of Art and Athletic Perfection," replied Ozma. "...and the young men who attend the college are no worse off than they were before. You see, in this country are a number of youths who do not like to work, and the college is an excellent place for them"

A cute story, though not extremely memorable.
