I enjoyed this book very much. Mercedes and Larry have done a wonderful job. It feels like you are there in this strange land. And the characters are so appealing. Thank you Mary Lou

Book one - great new series

First book of the series set in Valdemar just after the Mage Storm series. Darian, an orphan from both the Mage Storms and a barbarian attack on his village, find people who both understand and can help him learn to master his magical abilities.

Started out pretty slow, but picked up quite a bit. The chapters are each 50 pages long which was tough, but overall a great book by Lackey. I'm on to book 2...

Given to me as an Xmas gift, I couldn't get through the first chapter. Just wasn't to my taste.

Well, this book did NOT improve with another re-read. It was still pretty painfully slow and rather boring over all. I think a big part of the problem is that, not only does it not pick up where _Storm Breaking_ left off, not directly continues any of the series' main characters, but it only has seven chapters - making each chapter feel even longer than it already is. I wish that I had liked it more... maybe the remaining two books will be faster because it won't be such and "introduction" - with lots of summaries of the excitement of previous novels. At any rate, it can't feel that much slower!

Darian wishes someone would ask what he wants instead of telling him the way things are going to be; then his village is invaded and everything changes overnight.
