Gogol has to be one of my favorite authors. He has a way to make the story come alive, and one gets completely lost, even in the most absurd of all plots. This book is an amazing take on pettiness, being stuck in your ways -- ah there is no way to list it all, it's just really a great read.
Some have called The Overcoat the greatest short story ever; certainly it is one of the best from the Russian tradition. It vies in its own way with Kafka's Metamorphosis.
These stories are so short that you really need to read them. Gogol is prodigious at the absurd and the everyday; it is not only his wit, but the depth behind his wit, that provokes readers everywhere.
