This is a first in a series, also the first fiction by an author known for non-fiction. It's an excellent police procedural with a few well-placed red herrings. The lead character is complex and compelling, and it will be interesting to watch her development through later books. I had no idea what to expect from this book, but found it a delightful surprise; I'll now be looking for the second in the series.
