Author: Jill Shalvis
I SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN BED — Three weeks ago I, Rachel Bond, inherited a bed-and-breakfast. In Alaska. Just this morning I was in my warm bed in LA but now here I am, up north and this is, like, nosebleed north sorting it all out. So:  — PROS:                       ...  more »1.Bears and wolves and moose can't be any worse than LA guys.

2.You've heard of starving artists? I'm about to faint. So it s probably time for a change.

3.My good friend Kellan you'll like him, unlike me, he's cool under pressure -  suddenly has this animal sexiness I've never even seen before.

CONS:

1. ALASKA.

2.The house chef can't cook, and the guide can't read a map.

3.Kellan's sudden hotness is getting very hard to ignore.

4.I just got hit by lightning.

And I'm not sure if this is a pro or a con just yet, but since that lightning bolt, I can see through everything. As in completely transparent. That was before things started to get really weird . . ."

You got to give Shalvis points for coming up with an interesting plot, although it is littered with the usual cliches. Things can get a bit confusing, so you need to pay close attention to what's going on. I ended up liking Rachel and Kel, the book's protagonists, pretty well.

A lively and sexy romance set in the wilds of Alaska and alternate universes.

I shouldn't be surprised, there are a handful of JS's earlier books that just aren't that great. This is one of them. Rachel inherits a B&B in Alaska. She lives in LA and decided to fly out. I also put this down in the first chapter. Rachel was annoying and an idiot. I thought it would get better. Hint, it doesn't!
It's told in first person (which I don't have an issue with), alternating between Kellan and Rachel (which wasn't needed). It starts out contemporary switching to paranormal after Rachel gets hit by lightening and develops abilities. Make up your mind what you want to be! I wanted to throw book across the room (and I probably should have, it's a discarded library book I bought for 50 cents at the library sale). It would have been cathartic.
I should have DNF'd this. Skip it and don't waste your time. Her newer stuff is so much better. (Lucky Harbor I'm looking at you!).

I loved Shalvis' Lucky Harbor and Animal Magnetism series so much that I checked out everything by her from the library. I can't recommend this book if you enjoyed those series because it is very different in tone. There's plenty of sex, but no real community of characters. The heroine was immature and irritating. Her skill is painting, but we never see her paint. The story was trying to be too many things at once - funny, quirky, and paranormal and ended up not doing any of them well. Go read her more recent books instead!

A little confusing. Needed more in depth to story. I usually enjoy Shalvis but won't keep this one on my keeper shelf.
