Although this book has a very interesting concept and plot and I do plan to read the series, I found it be much more adult in style then it maybe needs to be. Because of that I have told my househould that it is adult reading not for children or even young adults in my opinion. I am very much looking forward to how some of the civil, racial and governing issues progress and are handled. It does tend to make one think about things... well atleast it does me.

I had put this book on my reminder list after reading the plot line and some of the reviews. I finally decided to give it a try and I am very happy that I did.

I started reading the book the same evening as it arrived and absolutely could not put it down until my husband awoke about midnight and asked me to shut my light PLEASE.

I ordered the next two in the series the next morning even before finishing # 1

This is the first in a very long series starting with the nuclear destruction of much of the world. Three major military powers gambling with nuclear and biological weapons as their playing cards....double-cross power plays. Sounds familiar? Does to me!!

There is a reluctant hero, lots of bad guys and some outright evil people. And then there are the rest of us....ordinary just wanting to pick up the pieces and try to live a peaceful life.

Call it pulp fiction if you wish. I agree BUT...there is bad pulp fiction and there is good pulp fiction. Only the reader can make that decision.

I do recommend this book with a comment to parental guidance...there is a lot of violence here but probably not much worse than the current nightly news.

I have been reading this author's books since I picked this one up in 1984, and have been hooked ever since. The Premise, at the time, was completely believable, and the reality of our society falling apart is becoming more and more clear, even in this day and age. As some people keep pointing out, this is not a book for children, but I was 14 when I picked this up, and have not found any books by this author that I hated. 35 books total in the series, and this is book 1! Pick it up for a good read! You'll get hooked on him, and now his niece has taken over writing his westerns, and doing a great job!

Ben Raines! Contact us! This message has gone out on CB radio and up on billboards as a nation brought to its knees by nuclear holocaust begins to regroup and look for a strong leader. Ben Raines, a retired soldier and mercenary known throughout the world for his best-selling novels expounding an America far different than the one that exists, is one of the survivors and does NOT want to be put in charge of anyone or anything. As he travels alone across the country,s earching for his family ,Ben discovers that his weapons and knowledge of survival techniques are among his most valuable assets and that we have learned nothing from war.
Finally tired of battling alone against the roving gangs and the repressive rule of the new government, Ben Contacts the soldiers and civilians of the Resistance forces, leading them to an isolated area of the West..there, in Tri-states, the threat his vision of America presents to the established order brings the final outrage: an armed attack by government forces. America, itself, hangs in the balance and Raines must win to bring the country out of the ashes.
