A beautifully written story that follows four brothers' lives, set in the prairie of eastern Montana in the first half of the 20th century. A very realistic tale that encompasses every aspect of human interaction, including mystery.

A really good book in the style of Willa Cather - about ranch life on the Montana prairie. I thought it was going to be slow, but it really had a lot of "human condition drama" and held my interest nicely.
Surprisingly good book about the life of a ranch post-WWI, through the depression and through WWII. Rowland develops his characters well and gives a sense of the isolation of life on the prairie during this time, when the West wasn't quite as settled as we might think it was. A no-frills picture of the simplicity and hardship that the ranchers chose when they chose to make their lives about the land.
