Rarely does a debut novel read as good as this one from C.J.Box. The main character is developed not as a kick ass superman but as a rookie game warden not really comfortable in his role and makes various mistakes that just add to his development. The description of the scenery in and around Twelve Sleep County, WY (A nod to the real Ten Sleep County, WY) is spot on. The supporting characters are a little predictable and the outcome wasn't that big of a surprise but well worth the trip getting there. The only real "pushing the envelope" flaw in the book is the oldest daughter (7 years old) and portrayed with what I deem as far too much maturity for a seven year old. As I read her part of the book I kept thinking she was a lot older. That being said I look forward to continuing this series and hope the characters don't become stale or the writing deteriorates. If you haven't read him before I do suggest grabbing a copy and enjoy.
