Douglas Clayborne walks into a barn to pick up a horse he's bought and finds a shotgun pointed at him. Isabel Grant was a fine looking woman but after coming out of the stall she was hiding in Douglas finds her 'as big as a house' and in premature labor. When her water breaks he carries her up to the house and delivers her son. Her husband was shot in the back by Boyle, a neighboring rancher who wants her land and her. She is basically being kept a prisoner on her own land. The rancher and his men won't let anyone onto her land or let her off. It just happened to be storming the night Douglas got through unseen and what helped even more was the men watching were drunk and didn't hear him. Now, with little Parker being born and the horses and house in need of supplies from town, Douglas sneaks out under the cover of darkness to break into the store in town and talk to the doctor who they won't let through. The plan is to keep it secret that the baby has been born to give him time to grow and get stronger before trying to get out of there. Douglas and Isabel become close during these 8 weeks they share together and end up in each others arms. She has fallen in love with him but he mistakes it for gratitude and figures that time and distance will take care of the feelings they've developed for each other. Shortly after their night together, Boyle's men come to the cabin when he's away with their guns blasting.

I love Julie Garwood's romance novels so much I keep all of them. Somehow I managed to get two of this book so that's the only reason I'm listing it on here. You can not go wrong with Julie Garwood!

The second in the Clayborne brothers trilogy centers on Douglas Clayborne. His trip is supposed to be a simple business transaction, but turns into something much more.

Douglas is sent to pick up an Arabian stallion from a young rancher, but when he arrives, he finds a young and very pregnant widow pointing a gun at his chest. He isn't too concerned until Isabel goes into labor and he is forced to deliver her premature son, Parker. The baby has a good chance of survival, but only as long as Douglas can protect them from a greedy neighbor.

Douglas realizes he is falling in love with Isabel and that he feels a fierce protectiveness for her and the baby. With the help of his brothers and the town's doctor, he manages to make them safe; but how can he ever win her as his bride?

Each of the three short "Rose" novels begins with the appearance of the brothers' beloved Mama Rose and a brief recap of the events of "For the Roses". Each story then sends a brother off to discover that love blooms in the unlikeliest places. Douglas Clayborne is Blue Belle Montana's champion of the defenseless, but he faces his ultimate battle when he meets Isabel Grant. Douglas can stop the ruthless villains out to steal Isabel's ranch and horses, but he cannot stop Isabel Grant from stealing his heart.

Dogulas Clayborne will never turn his back on anyone in need, and everyone in Blue Belle knows it. Time and again, his intolerance for cruelty of any kind has made him a champion of the defenseless...but his quiet strength faces its ultimate battle when he meets Isabel Grant. He arrives at her ranch to pick up the magnificent Arabian stallion he'd purchased, but he cannot leave the vulnerable woman behind when he discovers the danger that threatens her. Convincing the stubborn, strong-willed beauty that she needs him is another matter. Douglas can stop the men from stealing her ranch and her horses, but he cannot stop Isabel Grant from stealing his heart.

The Claybornes are back -- and love is in bloom! First introduced in Julie Garwood's magnificent 'New York Times' bestseller 'For the Roses', which inspired the 'Hallmark Hall of Fame' television film "Rose Hill," the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers -- once a mismatched gang of street urchins -- in a trio of special novels that continues with 'One White Rose'. Douglas Clayborne will never turn his back on anyone in need, and everyone in Blue Belle knows it. Time and again, his intolerance of cruelty of any kind has made him a champion of the defenseless...but his quiet strength faces its ultimate battle when he meets Isabel Grant. Douglas Clayborne is the hero in this episode; he has traveled to the farm where he has purchased an Arabian stallion. Instead, he finds a feisty widow with a gun who is in terrible danger from neighboring rancher Boyle, who wants Isabel Grant's land and her person (for his wife). The local citizens have been threatened by the villain so that they are afraid to help Isabel. Now that she is ready to deliver her baby, there is no one to help but Douglas.

After the delivery, the baby is in such fragile condition that Isabel and Douglas are stuck on the farm until the baby gets stronger. This is a short novella that is interesting and moves fast. An enjoyable read.
