Mark Childress' book is about race, religion, family, and love. This coming of age story takes place in Minor, Mississippi in 1963. Daniel Musgrove's father is a traveling salesman and he moves the family from one state to another every year. When they wind up in Minor, Mississippi, Daniel makes friends with another social misfit, with disastrous results.

At turns laugh out loud funny, heart wrenching and horrific, One Mississippi is a filled with interesting characters and nostalgic references to pop culture. Enjoyable ... but disturbing. I will definitely seek out his other books to read.

I love Mark Childress' writing. This one lives up to his previous works. It includes a lot of issues prevelant in today's news and maybe even ends leaveing the reader slightly uncomfortable.

Great story! This was a wonderful novel that takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster. It was funny and sad along the way to its tragic ending. The parts about the band concert, the Christ! musical, the prom, and especially the Sonny and Cher concert were priceless. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I couldn't put this one down. It made me think after I closed the cover. Childress does such a great job of describing the heat in Mississippi that you feel like you need to turn on the air conditioner.

I really enjoyed this book; it was a quick read with a compelling story line, at times funny and at times deadly serious. It would make a good movie!

An interesting tale of a young boy living in the South during the time when people were not treated equally! Shocking and unexpected ending!
