I think Mallery has become a cookie cutter romance writer. As much as I like her Fool's Gold world, I find her older books more interesting and creative. This was an okay book, not horrible but not great.

Things I loved about this book: Loved the scenes with family and friends because the warmth and fun shows through. What completely saved this book for me was Patience. She was an amazing character and had so much humor. There were some cute scenes between her and Justice as well. Loved the side characters, of course.

Things I disliked:

Justice had some good scenes with others but when it goes into his thoughts, it was pretty dumb. His fear of being his father and not wanting to be close to others was really lame. It's sophmoric and I expected more of an effort on Mallery's part in creating a more well-rounded character, not a weak caricature. She had a lot of potential with the character (because how a seasoned soldier deal with becoming a civilian again is a real issue) but it almost seemed like Mallery was too lazy to bother. Let's just churn out another self-torturing, delusional hero and call him "deep."

As usaul (and I complain about this a lot with Mallery) her endings are kind of abrupt and leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. The main character breaks the other one's heart, returns, and is received with open arms. For both Patience and her daughter who has been left so many times by all the men in their lives, you would think the trust would have to be earned.

There is one scene though that is very satisfying but totally unrealistic when the town women band to gather to save an abused women. It's nice and somewhat disturbing what the town is willing to do.

So not her best work but it was okay to pass the time if there is nothing better. I definitely don't think I would be spending any credits or real money on Mallery anymore. Will just have to get her stuff through the library.

A sweet small town romance about a single mom hairdresser following her dream of opening a coffee shop and finding love along the way. The hero was in witness protection as a child, joined the military, and is afraid of brining his darkness to the heroine's "normal" life. If you don't mind knowing the ending (it's a happy one!) before you start the book, this would be a good read for you.

Loved the story of Patience and Justice. A story that says there is a special one for everyone to love. The perfect summer romance with a splash of suspense. This is the first book in the bodyguard series. You do not need to previous Fools Gold books prior to this one.
