I liked this novella. It lays the groundwork for the series. I wonder if this novella was written after the first two books in this series because there is no mention of the two character, Maribel Boone and Kirk (no last name given.)Since we call all read, I'll skip the retelling of the story and start right in on the review.
I really enjoyed the reality of this novella. Maribel's son, Pete is not the "perfect angel" child. He's jumps off the page as a realistic kid who gets in trouble and will go aganist his mother's wishes to save a dog he loves. Maribel is a waitress. People we all know. The bike shop owner, Gonzalez, leaves his dog. Real stuff.
I really thought Kirk was going to re-open the bike shop by chapater 3. I liked how the author did such a good job of writing, but not over writing it.
Very easy to like Kirk especailly when Duncan appears. He is so full of himself. Not sure how this high powered photographer and Maribel even met. And like Maribel, I don't know he wants to marry her either.
I have some questions I could not answer by rereading parts of the text. For example, in chapter 9, when did Kirk get undressed? On page 126 they move off the couch into the kitchen. On page 127 puts his coffee on a table next to the couch. How did they get back there? Why is the curse at the end of the book? I would've thought it should have been the beginning. On the cover, the dog looks like a last minute paste. I also wondered if the arsonists will be in the following books in the series.
Having read the books in order, this book works well as a starting point. The most important information supplied is the story of the curse and Stan, the firehouse dog.
