One Fine Day by Theresa Weir
This book will stay with you for a long time. Its a deeply emotional and poignant book, so true to life in many ways. In some ways its also quite dark. The author doesnt sugar-coat anything. To give a brief summary, Austin and his sister Gabrielle were raised by an abusive father. Never having received love as a child, Austin is a driven workaholic unable to express love and is a critical tyrant where his wife Molly is concerned. After 20 years of putting up with his criticism and verbal abuse their daughter Amy is now grown with a child of her own -- Molly decides to leave Austin, a man she realizes she has never really known. A year into their separation, Molly receives a call from Amy telling her that her dad (Austin) has had a stroke. Angry at Molly for leaving him and humiliated by his diminished and helpless state, Austin wants nothing to do with his estranged wife. Since Amy is expecting her second baby, Molly decides to stay just until Austin is sufficiently recovered to take care of himself. As Austin goes through rehab and must re-learn how to walk, talk and care for himself, his chief motivation is to get the now resented Molly out of the house. An amusing battle of wills ensues, but the two grow closer over the time she cares for him and she discovers that contrary to what she thought perhaps hes loved her all along.
This book was a very emotional read with many, many layers to it. One thing I really enjoyed about it was the outstanding character development. She seems to get inside the characters heads and we see events unfold from each characters perspective. The supporting characters were also interesting and well drawn.
I never thought an author could outdo Laura Kinsales Flowers from the Storm, another story involving a man who has a stroke. This author comes close. Thats saying a lot. It's a definite keeper.
