As One Crying From the Dust Author:Brent L. Top The importance of the Book of Mormon is underscored by the fact that it was written for our day. The Nephites never had the book," said President Ezra Taft Benson. "It was meant for us." And in general conference he promised increased understanding of the Book of Mormon to all who would study it daily and abide b... more »y its precepts.
No doubt many followed this counsel. Brent Top, who was already teaching in the Church Educational System, was one of them. As his preface shows, the promise was amply fulfilled.
This book seeks not to offer general commentary but rather to focus on specific and timeless themes in the Book of Mormon. In pursuing this course the author sets forth the doctrine involved and offers examples, applications, and possible solutions in one's personal life.
For example, does one of your teenage children entertain doubts about the truthfulness of the gospel? The author suggests that having such doubts can be remedied so long as the person keeps seeking the answers. Teach him how to find the answers--from other believers and from good books, yes, but follow up with Nephi's question/answer to his unbelieving brothers: "Have you inquired of the Lord?"
Have you been born again? This phrase does not denote a belief held only by non-LDS believers in Christ. Rather, spiritual rebirth is sound Latter-day Saint doctrine and is indispensable in our reach for the celestial life. Moreover it is one of the doctrines that is perhaps more clearly explained in the Book of Mormon than in any other scripture.
Are you seeking to become perfect in Christ? This chapter defines the word perfect as used in the gospel context and warns against the belief some have that we should be perfect in every aspect of our lives--right now. And some miss the beautiful invitation in Moroni 10:32-33, yet find themselves on the path to a perfectionism that exhausts them physically and emotionally.
In concluding, the author recounts several moving conversion experiences brought about by the Book of Mormon. Ever since its first edition was published in 1830, it has been the great testifier and converter. Clearly, as it is introduced to more lands, this remarkable book will increasingly continue changing lives as one crying from the dust. « less
