A comforting, lovely Christian fiction read. Josh, a 12 YO orphan, being raised by his grandfather, uncle and a young aunt on a busy farm. Coming of age story - Josh is happy with the way his life is. He lost his parents to an accident when he was very young and has no memories of them. Now his grandfather and uncle are trying to find a husband for his aunt which threatens his world. Very comforting read.

Sure, it's unusual to have an eightee-year-old mother when you're twelve. But when you're an orphan and she's your aunt -- and the only mother you've ever had -- well as I explained, it had worked out real well.

That's why I got so riled up when I heard Grandpa and Uncle Charlie talkin' about findin' a fella for Auntie Lou!

You see, somethin' had to be done! I couldn't just sit back and watch our special family get broken up. But with Grandpa and Uncle Charlie workin' so hard to get Auntie Lou married off, I really had my job cut out for me.

Then when that poor preacher came along, it really go complicated ....

This is an enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys an old fashioned christian drama/romance. The story is told through the eyes of a 12 year old orphan boy who is trying to keep his world from changing. He is trying to keep his grandpa from finding a husband for his 18 yr old aunt who is the only mother he has. I grew to love all the characters.

Wonderful, heartwarming start to this series seen through the eyes of a young boy who's had to handle far too much in his young life and doesn't want more change.

A very uplifting book with rich characters, Christian faith, and a happy ending that helps us all remember that sometimes the change we fear can be better than we ever dreamed.

1st of 4 books, I sort of enjoyed it, I almost got over my disdain of books that don't set you in a certain time and place. i almost got over reading an author that doesn't add a -g to -ing words.

Sure, his family isn't typical--Josh knows that. But when Grandpa and Uncle Charlie begin to make plans to find Auntie Lou a husband--and take away the only mother Josh has ever known--he knows something has to be done. How can he find his way when his whole world threatens to come apart?

This was the first story that I read written by Janette Oke. I had seen her books in the Christian Book stores but never had the chance to read them. Once I retired from teaching and I read this first book of the series, I could not put her books down. I have read every one of her books and thoroughly enjoyed them all. What I like most about her writing is the fact that she is always in your mind as she writes about the events happening to her characters. I identify with her characters thoughts as do most people.

We were an unsual family-I knew that. But I had felt we belonged together, that we fitted somehow. And in my innocence, I had believed that things would always stay this way. All of a sudden, with no warning, everything was about to change.
