Nerissa Raleigh wants to be an author; her publisher tells her that the hero of her story must be more 'manly.' What Nerissa needs is a real-life example. When she sees a likely hero, she chases him down the street, only to lose him. However, that evening, she runs into him at a reception. When he asks why she has been following him, Nerissa tells her story. The young man is flabbergasted and refuses to help her.

However, Breck Davenant, son of a marquess and a leader in fashion, sees Nerissa and her sister in a shop the next day. He deigns to talk with her and everyone in the shop wants to make the sisters' acquaintance. As Nerissa and Breck interact more and more, it becomes obvious that she is naive (and 19-years-of-age) and he is a bit jaded (and 31-years old). About halfway through the book, I couldn't understand what Breck saw in Nerissa.

The first third of the book was fine, but it devolved from there. Nerissa got to acting younger and Breck's actions got stranger. For this book to make sense, Breck had to be one of those men who like to have a wife who fawns over him. Very average.
