I read this book (very slowly) in Spanish, with the English version available for difficult passages, and I liked it very much.

It's a very contemplative book and portrays how three main characters see themselves and their respective countries (US and Mexico)at a key time and place, when relationships among them were shifting. If you're looking for an action-packed narrative, this isn't it. If you're interested in the end of the colonial era in Mexico or Latin America, I recommend it.

I found this book very hard to read. The language did not flow well. It was like listening to somebody who had a bad stutter. Too much emphasis on style and not enough attention to the story. The conclusion and Fuentes' idea of what happened to Bierce and why he disappeared is interesting. I would not recommend this book to anybody.
