This is paperback, I do not believe that this series is available in hardback. This is Book 2 Elizabeth's family decides to move to California nd she must leave her lifelong best friend, Alice. Elizabeth is miserable about leaving her hometown in New York. Her family is going by train and boat and wagon train. She meets some new friends on the boat but her 5 year old brother Benji almost falls overboard the canal boat and she grabs him but Elizabeth is small for her age.She feels strong arms holding her. Who is trying to save her and Benji?
