Old Dominion University - College Prowler Author:Brandon Webb College guides written by students for students. — Old Dominion University Students Tell It Like It Is — Old Dominion University is like the cell phone of college institutions: it links a lot of people together from all over the United States and even the world. ODU is one of the largest providers of distance learning degree programs... more » in the country via its teletechnet initiative. Through partnerships with community colleges, military bases, and the establishment of higher education centers, Old Dominion has 50 extended campuses across the country and on Navy vessels deployed around the world. Thanks to its affiliation with the Virginia Community College system, no Virginian is more than 50 miles from an Old Dominion University site.
Even though "campus" life may vary in terms of where a student studies (whether its Norfolk or a navy vessel), the ODU atmosphere is pretty typical of college campuses.
"The downtown area has some interesting places, like Scottie Quix, which is a restaurant/club with some excellent music and great atmosphere."
"I love everything around ODU-so many options and opportunities to have fun."
Norfolk is an area that's really blossoming. Beginning in the late 1970s, mall developer James W. Rouse developed Waterside in downtown Norfolk, a "festival marketplace" concept that helped transform a formerly seedy harbor area into a major catalyst for other redevelopment. Dissimilar from a lot of college campuses, Norfolk is surrounded by water, which can be calming amidst the stress of classes. Like the beach atmosphere, most courses are extremely laid back, with students working together and helping each other out with assignments.
"Most of my professors have been fairly chill. I've only had, like, two that I really just couldn't talk to."
"I am much more laid-back here, and it's much easier for me to coast through my classes."
Visiting campus isn't enough.
