The epic tale of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War forms one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature. Confronted by natural and supernatural threats--ship wrecks, battles, monsters and the implacable enmity of the sea-god Poseidon -- Odysseus must test his bravery and native cunning to the full if he is to reach his homeland safely and overcome the obstacles that, even there, await him.

One of the world's most vital tales.

Homer's epic part 2 to the Illiad, the Odyssey, describes Odysseus' long journey to attempt to return home after the Trojan war. Monsters, Sirens, Sourceresses and lots of action make this one of the greatest stories in history. A must read.

I had heard of The Odyssey before and tried to read it on my own, but it wasn't until it was assigned in my World Lit class that I feel in love with it. It's full of adventure, vengeful gods, lusting goddesses, disguise, and mystery. I don't understand why few have really taken the time to read Homer's works.
I really liked this translation in particular, Robert Fitzgerald did an amazing job of making this ancient text easier to digest and analyze.
I highly recommend reading The Odyssey, whether you are an English major or not.

A defining classic of Greek Mythology in an excellent translation. It can be a bit challenging at times, but the quality of the translation certainly helps to make it far more readable. It should definitely be read by everyone, as a glimpse at the traditional story-telling so popular in Ancient Greece, and in tribute to the culture of Ancient Greece that is so essentially linked to our own.
