Excellent story in the Nina Reilly series. As usual, Ms. Reilly, attorney extraordinaire, is smack in the middle of a mysterious murder. Not only does she believe that her young client is innocent, she takes it one step further, and breaks the law herself while trying to protect him.

The writing sisters Pam and Mary O'Shaughnessy (Invasion of Privacy, LJ 8/96) have partnered again for a third entry in their Nina Reilly series of legal thrillers. This time Nina's a witness to the death by lightning of a construction mogul in the Tahoe Mountains. When his father returns from a business trip, he wants Nina to have the body exhumed and autopsied for signs of murder, setting off a family furor. Suddenly, the grave is empty, the bodies of both father and son turn up in a smoldering mountain cabin, and the grandson is charged with murder. Nina is then asked to clear the grandson amid an increasingly complex series of interrelationships involving the D.A., his dead wife, a not-so-grieving widow, and, of course, the gardener.

This is another great read by the O'Shaunessy sisters. Nina Reilly is a gutsy heroine inspite of her self doubts. She's worth reading!

I have mixed feelings about Nina. She is very smart and dedicated to her profession, but she is a mess when it comes to her personal life. In this story, she is hiking with a man friend she has eyes for and a bad storm comes up. One of the people they have crossed paths with falls from the mountain and is killed. Afterward, she is asked to represent them. In addition, her ex beau is working locally trying to find the owner of the driver who killed the wife of the man Nina was hiking with. He still cannot move forward since her death three years hence. Nina's ex who proposed but was spurned by her with a let's be friends for now attitude, is working for Nina's current interest trying to find the killer of his wife. The story is excellent and comes together in a clever way. The main characters are very human.

good mystery style book. Half takes place in Lake Tahoe, described places there well, I know they are good since I live there. The other half takes place in Kailua Hawaii and those descriptions are just as good, lived there also for a short time. Good book for the mind.

A distraught teenager charged with murder, a woman lawyer who believes he's innocent, and one piece of evidence that can ruin him, if she doesn't hide it first . . . This is a captivating and beautifully plotted novel, a mystery within a mystery novel with two fast action story lines and Nina Reilly, one of the most interesting heroines in legal thrillers. An interesting book, and fun to read.

Two people have died in macabre accidents, one struck down by lightning on Tahoe's highest mountain and one mowed down by a hit-and-run driver. In the middle of controversial procedure to exhume one of the bodies, powerful businessman Quentin de Beers is murdered. Charged with murder, Quentin's angry grandson Jason won't talk even to Nina, his defense attorney. To save her client, Nina must expose the truth about his troubled family and untangle the hidden connection that links all three deaths. As the trial draws to an end, both the D.A. and Nina are forced to make a harrowing decision to protect the innocent...at the risk of letting the guilty go free.

Two people have died in Lake Tahoe in shocking accidents. In a nearly empty parking lot, a hit-and-run driver kills probation officer Anna Meade Hallowell. High up on a jagged mountain, wife abuser Ray de Beers gets what he deserves: he's struck by lightning. Attorney Nine Reilly, hiking on a rare day off from her one-woman law practice, sees him die. So does her date, Tahoe deputy DA Collier Hallowell. Still shaken from his wife's violent death, Hallowell is hit hard by the accident. It's a bad end to a first date...and the start of a case that will test Nin's ethics and her heart.
