Good read. Takes a little time to get familiar with a large cast of characters, but the set up is worth it. Plenty of intrigue, red herrings, and small twists keep you guessing.

Lescroart may have a bit of a mean streak - there's a nasty "April Fools" style joke on the reader.

The city has just received a thirteen million dollar bill from their HMO for non covered services for the past four years and while officials are deciding what to do, the HMO chief executive is run down by a car and he's rushed to his own hospital, and now someone wants to make sure he's dead.

While Dismas Hardy, defense attorney and Abe Glitsky, head of homicide, are best friends, they end up on opposing sides this time while looking for a serial killer and their differences put a huge strain on the relationship.

This book moves quickly and never gets boring.

I enjoyed the characters in this book and found them easy to follow. The plot and outcome were interesting and easy to understand. I just finished reading The "Motive" and it's nice to see the characters taking on new challenges. It's also nice to see how their relationships continue to intertwine and develop over time. I highly recommend this book and the author.
