I've read several (but certainly not all) of Sandra Hill's historical romances. This was the first time I felt she was really trying too hard to be clever.

She inserted little "subtitles" within the chapters that were disruptive to the flow of the story. For example, "Sex in the Golden City" or "He was a regular Marco Polo" and my least favorite: "It Wasn't the Wedding of Kate and Prince William, but Still..." These random references to other historical or current times do not fit in a Viking story, in my opinion.

That being said, I tried to ignore the cutesy little titles and focus on the story. From that perspective, I really enjoyed this book. Out hero and heroine were strong and likeable, flawed but honorable and ultimately dealt with several obstacles in a satisfying way.

For the story, I would give Ms. Hill 4 stars but the attempts at wit fell flat and caused me to lower the rating to 3 stars overall.

I couldn't finish this one. I felt like the author was mocking the genre of romance.
