Gillian Leigh is NOT what Noble Britton is looking for in a wife. SHe must be quiet, biddable and not draw attention to herself or cause any scandal. Gillian is accident prone, American and had a laugh and smile that captured his heart long before he was willing to admit it!!!
Laugh and cry and want to sock Noble yourself ......

I wasn't sure I was going to finish this in the beginning since there's a few major inconsistencies, like her family warning her that he's no suitable then letting her go out unchaperoned with him and then not a peep about his unsuitability when they married. I got past that though and ended up enjoying this. The writing style is a little different. The author let you know things through dialog that she never addresses in narrative. Frex: -- You need to put something on that shiner -- but no mention of the black eye outside of dialog. Somehow it works but it might annoy some people. If you don't take this too seriously, it'll be a lot more fun.

Katie Macalister is fabulous. I love all of her work. Funny, bright, quick, and sensual.
Noble Britton had suffeed greatly at the hands of his first wife, and he refused to fall into the same trap again. This time he intended to marry a quiet, biddable woman who would not draw attention to herself or cause scandal.

There are parts of this book that had me laughing out loud. The Romance Reader calls it a "Screwball Regency". Very accurate.

Incredibly funny book as well as a wonderful historical.

I like Katie Macalister's contemporary romances and found this Regency era historical romance was just as humorous. The heroine is an outspoken "on-the-shelf" American who is chosen by a stern English Lord to be his bride and mother to his son. Society thinks he has killed his first wife. He thinks he can mold his new wife into a prim, acceptable mate unlike his philandering first wife. Of course his new wife is determined that her marriage will be a love match and that she won't be left to breed heirs in the country while her husband lives in London. Throw in some blackmail, devious goings on, attempted murder, and lots of quirky characters and dialogging and it's a fun read.
I think I would have liked this better had Gillian's Unfortunate Habit not been so extreme. Too some extent it's funny, ha ha, but quickly gets old that she is so clumsy, idiotic, etc. That being said, Gillian is a very likeable character.
Entertaining romantic comedy. Gillian has a good heart but she is terribly accident prone, and every thought in her head is immediately coming out of her mouth, she just can't help it.
If you remember the movie "Bringing Up Baby", the hero (whose name is Noble) is just like the Cary Grant character. He believes in living a rational and planned-out life, but that's hopeless once he gets involved with the well-meaning but impulsive heroine(the Katherine Hepburn character), who gets him involved in one fiasco after another.
The part of the plot about the "bad guy" who was trying to harm them was kind of obvious, and never totally made sense to me, but I just ignored it. Altogether I was charmed by this book, it had very funny dialogue and even the love scenes were humorous.

Not my favorite Katie MacAlister book. In fact, if I had read this series first, I would not have tried the the Dragon or Dark Ones series. I didn't care for the weak heroine who seemed like a dumb-wit. If you don't care for this or the other books in the series, don't dismiss Katie MacAlister. Try Dragons or Dark Ones series if you like witty contemporary romances.
I really enjoyed this book!! I never had so much fun! Katie MacAlister is an author with a sense of humor and it shows in the books she writes. This book has everything you're looking for: love, scandal, fun and sexual tones!! I couldn't put this book down once I picked it up! I have read just about every book this author has written and look forward to the many more she'll continue to write. If you're looking to have a good time, then this book is the one for you!! Woohoo!
Enjoyed the book. The humorous outlook of the heroine allowed the sourness of the hero to be tolerable.
Head over heels in love
Noble Britton had suffered greatly at the hands of his first wife, and he refused to fall into the same tray again. This time he intended to marry a quiet, biddable woman who would not draw attention to herself or cause scandal. Gillian Leight's honest manner and spontaneous laughter attracted him immediately. It mattered little that she was accident-prone, he would provide the structure necessary to guide her. But unconventional to the tips of her half-American toes-toes that one of them was constantly tripping over-his new bride turned the tables on him, wreaking havoc on his orderly life. And worse, demanding he surrender his heart. Perpetually one step behind his beguiling spouse, Noble suffered a banged-up head, a black eye, and a broken nose before he realized Gillian had healed his soul; and proved that heir union was no heedless tumble, but the swoon of true love.
