Wow,what a great but tragic story. A boy who is picked on from the first day of kindergarden until high school. What being bullied really does to a child day after day. The tragedy of Columbine and all the other school rolled into one. this story made me feel such pity for the boy who felt he had no other recourse but to do what he did.The results were tragic, the outcome shattered lives forever but it made you really think of what kids go through and what they do to others. I know I thought of my own two grown children who were treated in very similar ways. In my opinion this is Jodi Picoults best book.

This was not my favorite Picoult book. While I connected with the characters (she has a gift for making everyone sympathetic), for some reason I couldn't completely connect with Peter, the school shooter. I understood his motives and felt his shame, but Picoult doesn't let you into his head quite enough. The Pact was much better at making me feel everything the two teens went through.
If you like Picoult, you'll like this one, but I don't think it's her best. Even the huge revelation in the courtroom falls flat. She set it up well, but I just didn't feel the shock that I've felt while reading her other books.

Fantastic book incredibly well written. Harking back to "Lord of the Flies," Picoult explores the dynamics of unsupervised group behavior among school children. It deals with all the themes that screech "inappropriate" for a young audience (F word numerous times, teen sex, violence, etc.) but it may be the most appropriate book for students and teachers and parents concerned with bullying and the related social dynamics. The story seems so well researched I had a hard time remembering that it is fictional. An expert witness for the defense of the Columbine-style shooter asks, (paraphrasing) "What is the most vivid memory you have of your school days? If you're like 95 out of 100 people, that memory revolves around your humiliation at the hands of a bully." (I have to paraphrase because my copy stays loaned out to fellow educators.) And what are the consequences of unchecked chronic bullying? At its most extreme: Columbine.

Enough happens in this book it could be a two-part miniseries. The chapters shift back and forth from past to the present to add important background info and I found it annoying.
Nineteen Minutes has much more depth than My Sister's Keeper in character development and story structure. Picoult's ability to fabricate events surrounding an entire school community that is so hauntingly real is amazing.

It was difficult to get this book out of my mind. The topic is way too timely and gives insight into what may be going on in our society today in the world of high school students.
"Nineteen Minutes" was very well written and I liked the way the author switched between the present and the past. It was a very interesting way to present the events that could lead up to such a tragic day. My only disappointment was with the ending. While the ending was unexpected, the reader is left with the impression the " twist " Ms. Picoult is known for was added just to be controversial.

I've read a few Jodi Picoult books which have been a bit predictable. However, this book truly kept me engaged through the 450 pages. I had just about moved on from the author, but I will now be looking into move of her books. Enjoy!

I love the way Jodi Picoult tackles controversial issues. This book was an emotional roller coaster ride for me, but most of hers effect me that way. I love her way with words. She's truly a wonderful writer.

This book was fantastic until the ending. I thought that the ending was so unrealistic and infuriating and annoying, that it makes me want to rip up the entire book.
It does give very good insight into the "how" and "why" we always want to know after a school shooting, though.

This is my second favorite Jodi Picoult novel. Very intense, very deep, very scary. She delves deep into emotions of all involved in a high school shooting spree, including the shooter himself. This is very touching, and brought tears as I read it. She tells a great story and makes you feel the anguish, fear and anger of these people involved, and someone makes the shooter even seem pitiful. This could be anyone's son! Very deep novel, I thought.

Fantastic. It's really unbelievable just how deeply Picoult delves into the human psyche. This is a "Columbine" syle school shooting, told by a few different views - and the sad part it, teenagers today (I have two, so I KNOW) can be JUST like this on a daily basis. It's sad.

I really enjoyed this book. It is very sad and has a shocking twist at the end. However, with the increase of school shootings today, it is very important to take into account these tough topics. Seeing as my son is going through some minor bully issues right now, this book kind of freaked me out, honestly *laugh*. It was a good book, standard Picoult stuff. This one felt like it might have been a little too long though and could have used a few cuts.

While small children Peter and Josie were the best of friends, but as the years go on Josie becomes one of the popular kids while Peter becomes the perennial âloser'. One beautiful spring morning Peter finally snaps and in nineteen minutes destroys the lives of almost everyone in his town when he takes revenge by shooting ten students and teachers dead and wounding scores of others.
The book opens with the shooting and then tells the story in alternating chapters, from what happened before the shooting and what happened after. The chapters are seen from many view points, but most often that of Peter, Josie and their mothers. It is an often harrowing tale of what happens when a child endures years of bullying, teasing and never quite living up to expectations. It is also a view of what lengths kids will go to become, and stay, one of the âcool' kids. Having a child still in high school and one who just left I was very saddened by this book and the behavior of the kids, the adults, the teachers who let this torment continue. It was at times so difficult to read I had to put the book down and walk away from it, in order to empty my mind of the sadness.

This is another excellent Jodi Picoult book!!! I could not stop reading this book!!! The whole way through the book you assume it will end a certain way and when you get to the end you get the thrill of finding out that it doesn't end how you thought it would. I would recommend this book to everyone who have children. It makes you think, while at the same time shows you just how harmful peer pressure and being accepted in this world affects us all in different ways.

Out of the handful of Picoult books I have read, I would put this one in the "it was pretty good" pile. I think she handled an issue such as a school shooting in a way that explored all facets of the situation, and really made you look at it from different viewpoints. Overall, I think if you like Jodi Picoult, you will not be disappointed by this book.

I really enjoy reading Jodi Picoult, however I often feel like I am reading the same story over & over if I read them too closely together....but that is not so in "Nineteen Minutes". Wonderfully written, with twists & turns you wouldn't expect and the best part is actually getting to read the school shooter's side of story. It really makes you think about today's youth and the effect society's expectations have on children. This is an excellent book, one of Jodi's best! I highly recommend.

I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because of the ridiculous ending. I thought she did such a nice job with all of the characters, so the ending she chose was a major letdown. I was a fan of this book...until the end. For some reason, the ending just didn't make sense to me, and it didn't seem to fit the rest of the entire book. I wasn't a huge fan of Josie, particularly because I thought she was fake and weak. But I did want the best for her because I did like Alex. So at the end..I felt like that piece just didn't fit right because it seemed kind of hard to believe, based on the characters personalities.

This is only the second of Jodi Picoult's books that I've read (other was My Sister's Keeper) and I really like both. Her writing style is easygoing and the plot has good twist and turns. It really keeps you reading and wondering. I knew from My Sister's Keeper that this book might have a surprise ending, and it certainly did. Picoult is good at taking stories right from the newspapers and putting her own spin on them. Really good book.

Sad, as you know this can & does happen. With a complete twist at the end, that I did not see coming. After I was done reading it, I wanted to go hug my boys & never let them go.

I'm not sure where to start on this one.. Excellent book but at times I wasn't sure I would finish it as the subject matter is SO painful.. I experienced a wide spectrum of emotions with this one.. From hating the victims to empathizing with the "villain" - but as a parent of small children mostly my heart breaking for the parents of all the children involved.. Actually, I had to make myself stop reading before bed, as I would end up thinking about the book & not sleeping. I finished it last night & cried for a while. ncredibly well written - but does take a bit to get used to the jumping back & forth between past & present. Highly recommended but not for the squeamish!!

Jodi Picoult's characters have a way of staying with you long after you've turned the last page, and "Nineteen Minutes" is no exception. I was happy to see Patrick DuCharme return, and was glad to see him move on after "Perfect Match" (I have to admit I don't like Nina Frost very much, and was frustrated by Patrick's seemingly hopeless love for her). It was also great to see Jordan McAfee back -- he's a wonderful character and I hope we haven't seen the last of him, either!

Jodi Picoult's stories are full of action, reaction, mystery and always, a surprise ending. I have enjoyed her writing for the last couple of years and Nineteen Minutes is no exception. You feel anguish and cameraderie, happiness and sadness, the gamut of emotions among her characters. Her writing is very fluid, making you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I am following through with all of her titles!

WOW! This book blew me away! I wasnt sure I was going to like it given the graphic topic, but this is by far the best Picoult book I have read yet! Intriguing, thought provoking--I wish it were required reading for teens everywhere. The different perspectives of the various characters, and the way she had the story unfold was genius. It was such a different look at a sad situation and how an ordinary kid could be tormented to their breaking point. I would give it 6 out of 5 stars (yes thats off the charts!) -- I have been recommending it to everyone--OUTSTANDING!

Well...I just finished reading this book. I finished it in about 2 days. When I started this book it was really good, then, for me, it started dragging. I ended up finishing it because I wanted to see where it would lead, but really the whole thing seemed really cliche. This was a great read. I would encourage every parent of a teenager to read and have their child read too. Interesting enough to keep even a reluctant reader's attention. It really opens up topics of conversation. It also challenges precnceived notions about school violence.

This is a great book. At first I didn't think I was going to like it but once I got into it, I hated to put it down.
I found I really liked the style this book is written in although I had my doubts at first.

This book was a little difficult to read because of the violence and timing, but really got you thinking. I ended up even reading the questions to Jodi Picoult in the back. It's really early to be writing about school shootings, so if you're not ready for that, don't read it. But if you are ready, it really helps you to get into the mindset of a shooter, which is disturbing.

Picoult did a decent job explaining both sides of this ethical/moral dilemma situation. What she neglected to do is to make it a gray area, as is her usual style. Killing 12 people (most not even involved) and injuring 19 others because you were bullied is kind of a black and white scenario.
Characteristically, Picoult creates terrible mothers who fumble around, trying to undo years of neglect and/or indifference to their childrens' lives. They both remained in complete ignorance of their childrens' lives. I felt sorry for the kids, victims of poor parenting. It should be the parents on trial here.

I have not read all of Jodi Picoult books. This one is my favorite of the ones I have read. It is a page turner; interesting, engaging, and makes the reader stop and think about the issues that teenagers face growing up. If you did not understand how much bullying happens in schools, especially high schools then this will convince you, and certainly remind you of Columbine. However, as much as I think this book is about bullying behavior, and the possible consequences of this kind of behavior, I think the "quieter", overlooked issue is about teenage girls. This book is also about how girls lives are centered around being attractive, popular and how much they are pressured to perform in certain ways. It is about how critical it is for girls to be part of the "right crowd", and have the right boyfriend. This story is about how Josie was quietly bullied by her boyfriend, and coerced into supporting his wants and needs, including sex until she got to the point that she was as much a victim of bullying and exclusion as the shooter.
The ending did not come as a complete surprise, nor was it completely unexpected. It did start a dialogue with my daughter and daughter-in-law who are the mothers of 5 girls! And a recommendation to read my book!

Jodi Picoult does it again. Touching on subjects that are difficult from any side, Jodi Picoult takes on school shootings - from all perspectives. And does a great job, too. I read some reviews that were angry at her for "taking a shooter's side" but I didn't get the impression at all that this was her take on the issue - I did understand that she was trying to answer the one question everyone asks when such a tragedy occurs: WHY? I loved it, it was difficult at times to read about children being killed, but at the same time it was very eye-opening to realize that this is what is happening at our children's schools and social situations, and I really recommend it to anyone who has school age children or has been bullied or even just likes a good read. A+

Started to read this one and couldn't finish it. This is the only Picoult book I've had trouble with. The theme reminded me too much of the Columbine massacre, and that was a little too real for me.

Good read, but I do have to say many parts were difficult to read. This was my first Picoult book and I was instantly hooked. As a former teacher, it really makes you think about how young bullying starts in our children. Many Picoult books I will read again and again, this one I probably will not be able to. Not because it wasn't wonderfully written, but because it was so true and scary to the way the world is today. I do recommend this book though...especially to parents and anyone who works with children.

What I loved most about this book is how well-developed, rich, and complex the characters are. It's what makes it so engrossing and hard to put down. I became invested in every single character, and the author forces you to let go of your expectations of what "good" and "bad" people are. Loved it.

This book was so absolutely gripping, that I had to force myself to take breaks to get back to reality. It really makes you question how schools and teenagers co-exist and unfortunately, how extreme violent acts such as school shootings can take place in our world today. The characters were real and complex, and the plot full of surprises and twists. I read any Jodi Picoult book that I can get my hands on and am a huge fan of My Sister's Keeper and The Pact, but this one far surpasses both. I highly recommend this book!

This is one of my favorite contemporary books. I have recommended it to everyone in my life that reads - friends, family, and some of my students. It is more violent than Picoult's typical stories, but there is still the expected character development and flaws not to mention plenty of tear-jerker moments throughout.

This is the first Jodi Picoult book I've read, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Unsettling story of a school shooting in which the shooter survives & stands trial. Interesting points of view with emphasis on the shooter's family and close childhood friend. Surprise ending! Good read!

Great book! Not at all what I expected but Jodi Picoult's usual glimpse of real people and how life can be unexpected and surprising.
This is a great book. I could not put it down! I am not a fast reader unless i have a book that i really like. I finished this in a week. Such a great story. Jodi Picoult is my one of my favorite authors,she always writes stories that are so true to life and really make you think.

I am a Picoult fan and I thought this one was a bit slow and the characters were not quite developed in the first half of the book as they became later in the book. I still enjoyed it and would recommend it but just not one of my favorites.
Nineteen Minutes is the tragic story of Josie and Peter, two best friends that grow apart due to popularity. From their seperation as friends on, each grow further and futher apart until one day they end up back together - laying on the ground of the locker room after Peter has gone on a rampage, shooting up the school and killing many of his classmates. What could drive someone to this point? This novel gets inside the minds of not only the loser of the school, Peter but the winner as well, Josie to see both sides of the popularity game in High School. This novel bounces between what led to such a tragedy and the present time, placing the framework of what if turning into what was.
This novel is well written and fast paced enough to keep somone turning from page to page. The only issues I have with the novel is some unsolved mysteries and the last chapter could have been a bit more filled out. All in all though it is a solid book that is a good read.

Waste of time reading this, I was very disapointed. I usually enjoy reading JP's books but this one was like someone else wrote it. It didn't have the usual style or content. I think JP was trying too hard to be a teenager in this, language was very intense.
Enjoyed this book...it read at a nice pace...the story was well put together.
This book was absolutely rivetting- Picoult takes a modern topic that is every parents nightmare and creates a story that is mesmerizing taking us into the mind and motivation of the teen shooter. She paints the story with many shades of grey and nuances are explored that are lost in the newspapers reporting of such incidents in our society.

Plots with school shootings and bullying have been rampant in the past 10 or so years, but I think this was one of the first. It's a thoughtful book and emotionally taxing but worth the read. Not a big fan of the author myself, but this was a moving story.

Great read - it kept me guessing all the way to the ending. As a mother, it was difficult to NOT get emotional. Makes me want to hug my little girl. Sad, but riveting subject.
Focus on school shooting, of course life changing for all. Technique: intricate flashbacks and 1st person examination of the minutiae of the peoples' challenges living life and coping with real or perceived hardships. Very long in the middle. Some characters (like real people) very self absorbed, with "poor pitiful me" attitudes and few coping skills (like real people). But I got tired of reading about it. Way too much drama. I skipped about 100 pages and picked up the last 20 and feel like I only missed filler. Maybe I've moved on from Picoult as this flashback technique seems to be her main writing style, and it can become tedious.

I love her books. I know they're terribly Lifetime-movie-esque, but I just love them. Utterly emotional, impossible to put down. You care about all of the characters - and there is always a twist at the end. This one was no different.
Even though it barely glosses the surface, I really like that an author tried to take the time to write a story about how, even just a little, it is for kids who get picked on when they're young. It's definitely something that needs to start at home (like put a baby monitor in your kids room until they're 18, especially if they talk to ANYONE online--seriously, trolls start young) and parents need to stop raising bullies (and realize all kids aren't angels).

I really enjoy books by this author...this was the first that I read and it was enthralling! Picoult really gets into analyzing her charactors, and always gives a bit of a surprize ending. She does not disappoint in this book to surprize you. Once you start this book it will definitely be hard to put down until you have finished.
Being the mother of a 5yo and 5 month old, this story was very hard to read, but brought back high school and all of its political nuances. Having 'read' it on CD was helpful to me, as I think the style/format lends itself to hearing the story since the story jumps forward and backward in time. Very well written and insightful. I have to agree with others that the ending was disappointing and seemed to reach to far to make a point that could have been made without quite so much drama. I enjoyed it and will recommend to other mothers with small children as a guide to 'pay attention' to your kids regardless of their rank in the social strata.

It is amazing that the "19 minutes" all take place in the very first few pages of the book, yet Jodi Picoult still captures you for the entire story. It was a really good book that makes you look as small children on the playground differently, b/c you wonder how what happens to them now at this young age can impact them for their whole life.

Having never read Jodi Picoult before, I am pleased with her style. This book was very thought-provoking for me because it was about the cruelty of children to other children. It's also about the love of parents for their children whether they are the innocent victims or the accused.

The story behind a school shooting, but with a twist--it looks sympathetically at the family of the shooter and how even a kid who performs a horrendous act has someone who has loved him. Picoult provides a good in-depth look at the potential consequences of bullying. It really makes you think about judgements and that we need to dig beyond the surface to find truth.

Of all Jodi Picoult's book this was probably the one I enjoyed the most. It was an interesting perspective on school violence. The story doesn't condone what the school gunman has done but it gives you the view from the other side of the fence. I would recommend it as a worthwhile read.
In Picoult's books you can see yourself joining with either side of the moral dilema presented and this one is no different. Very engaging story and a must read!

This author has a way of describing and dealing with heart aches that so many of us have endured or watched or helped take care of. Beautifully written, Nineteen Minutes deals with the subject of bullying and is worth the time to read. If you enjoy heart touching, reality reads this one you may like also.

Yet again, a wonderful read by Picoult. Parts of it were slightly predictable, but somehow that didn't manage to ruin the book for me as the characters were so well developed. She draws you into her storyline each time...

This book has a great story line, begging you to try and see life through a bullied teen's eyes. Of course it's no excuse to do what he did, but Picoult likes to provoke us a bit. Maybe a few teens will read it and take some pity?? High school is a tough place for teens. I think as we become adults it is more acceptable to be different (or even that we are more accepting of ourselves).

A fascinating (fictional) study of a very current topic. As always Jodi Picoult tackles difficult moral issues head on. Definitely food for thought that should be required reading for all parents of teenagers, educators, and students. The character development is excellent and the writing economical.
If you didn't give this book a five go back and re read it you missed something.

This book was very interesting in that it addressed the power of cliques, the effects of bullying and parenting. I really enjoyed reading it - as I do many of her books.

A compelling book that you don't want to put down, this tells the story of a school shooting that examines the emotions, reactions and thinking of the shooter, the students, the mother of the shooter, the mother of a surviving student, and the detective examining the case. The kind of bullying/harassment that happens in today's schools is depicted and was quite an eye-opener for this reader. It is not a "fun" read due to the topic, but it does grab you.
Like all of Jodi Picoult's books, this is another incredible journey that in the end makes you feel you understand what it's like to experience a tragedy from everyone's perspective. She is a gifted writer whose books should not be missed.

It was one of those books that I couldn't wait to get done with whatever I was doing so I could get back to the book and read some more. It is a rather thick book but worth every page. A really great read.
Incredibly haunted read. The issues that we face as a community are brought to life in this heart wrenching novel. Jodi Picoult is a genius when it comes to tugging at the heart strings.

This is the first Jodi Picoult book I've read, I was disappointed. It just didn't ring true to me, especially the media and legal aspects. She did lots of flashbacks, which to me made the story disjointed. She added some aspects that didn't necessarily improve on the story and made it less believable (the older brother would have been much more of a part of a life, he and his fate was barely touched on.) My jaw didn't drop at the ending. The author does better at micro- than she does at macro-.
This was an excellent book although it was disturbing and especially in light of recent school shootings and the sadness and questions left behind. Having said that it is a read that every parent should read to evaluate what we do to our children and what bullies can do to our children.
There's a lot of good stuff in this book, but it has it's flaws. So many characters are introduced in the beginning chapters that I stopped even trying to keep track of them all. The scenes flip back and forth in time often enough that you're not sure at the beginning of each one whether you're continuing the linear timeline from the last scene or if you've jumped again. She makes the shooter such a sympathetic character that I started feeling like I was being beaten over the head with it, which only reinforces my feeling that this 400 page book could have been 100 pages shorter, since I was often feeling like I wanted the story to move faster.

As usual, her surprising plot twists and engaging characters make for as much of a "read-at-one-sitting" as you can get away with!
This book is the reason I fell in love with the author Jodi Picoult. She writes about such real life situations that make you sit back and think. Nineteen Minutes is a book that will make you cry and not just for the victims. You will cry for everyone involved. The book follows the after math of a school shooting, but also lets you look back on the lives of a few that are involved. You start to feel for each and every character and at the end you are in for a huge suprise. It was a great read and so close to the heart that it had me crying for awhile even after I put the book down. It is about love, loss, tragedy, and exactly how far one will go for people they truly love.
This book was amazing. It kept me glued to the pages. The trial at the end was really nice.
One of my Favorites by Jodi, well written and superb characters. You begin to feel for the antagonist, that is the mark of a good writer. Had goosebumps as I read the final pages. The twists and turns keep you reading and I was unable to put it down.
Since the Tradegy of Columbine hits close to home with me - so did this book. This was a compelling story line and well written just like all the rest of Jodi Picoult's books.

An excellent book for any one concerned about the after effects of bullying and teasing in school or life in general. Written in a way that leaves a very good base to be discussed with others.
This book is really good! I read it and found myself still talking about it even after it was over. I really felt for the main character and what he went through his whole life. A very emotional read.
Good book, as a mother it really made me think. Based around a Columbine type situation, you get to see the story from many different points of view.
I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult and Nineteen Minutes did not disappoint me. The book jumps from past to current but it is easy to follow. I really liked the handwritten notes before each chapter that you can never really guess which 2 of the main characters is the author. This book has is a must read for all of us out there that do not understand the things that are going on in the world today with teen violence and it really shines light on bullys,popular kids, parental relationships & more. I think this would be a great read for teens & parents, but not limited too.
Author always has a message to send in each book. This one was great and so appropriate to what is happening in our society right now.
I am enjoying the book, not quite done, but it is compelling and well written. I think the character development is well thought out and has kept me intrigued and wanting to read the next page. Can't wait to read the ending.

This one is okay. It's the third one that I read of Picoult. I really liked the first one that I read and really hated the second one that I read, and this one just kinda sat in the middle. I doubt I'd read it again.
My emotions were all over the place when I read this book. I thought it was very well written to understand everyone involved. I think every parent and teenager should read it. It is very relevant to our world today! Parents are too busy or uninvolved. Kids are bullies, bullied, forgotten, misunderstood, outspoken or introverted. Somehow we need to do better.
A difficult subject but masterfully handled by the queen of contemporary storytelling. Jodi Picoult has done her homework and her characters seem very real. You grieve along with each one of them. One of her best.
Although this is Colimbine-like story, it's really a story about bullying and the affects it has on the victims and their loved ones. It will keep you turning pages rght up until the end.

Those which are "unfortunate" to be different and don't want to or can't be like the mainstream are the outsider, therefore often the targets of mocking and malice. Tackling the circumstances that might lead to school shootings I found the book a bit too much to be a dripping cliché.
Of course it is interesting to see through the shooter's eyes but I never felt that would justify what the main character Peter did. More important to me would have been a focus on his parents (whose faults also felt like the typical cliché), not only in the past but preferably in the present but that's just my opinion. Instead we get a denying father and a mother only asking herself what she did wrong.
To come to the plot itself I found a lot of characters far fetched and just too unbelievable to really have happened.

For the topic, this book was just too long for me, and it became tedious. Every possible angle was examined. But Picoult is an excellent writer, and I enjoy her writing in general. Great study from a victim's viewpoint. D.
I loved this book.....but I feel in her effort to bring a twist to the ending, Picoult screwed up. The contrived scenario ruined it for me.
I rated this book lower than other Jodi Picoult books I've read because the ending was not believable.
Jodi Picoult has the power to humanize the most morally devoid East Coaster to the average Midwestern. This book is no exception. However, after the final court room twist, we do not see what was going on in Josie's head. We see Peter's, his mother's, and her mother's point of view. Yet, Josie was the one who altered the entire story; therefore I found the ending lacking.
Again, Jodi keeps me wanting more at the end.

Commenters on the blog more or less ranted about how awful the book is, and wanted to virtually toss it on a bonfire. If a bunch of parents and conservatives hate the book, that means I have to read it.
I got the book, but wasnt in any hurry to read it, it sort of felt like an assignment. I started reading and got hooked on the story and the characters. My conclusion is that the parents who protested this book and those that commented on the blog obviously hadnt read it and didnt know much about it. The book was not an a chore to read, in fact much the opposite. I should have read it sooner as I really enjoyed it.
Although the shooting is a plot device, the book really isnt about the shooting. Its about relationships. The story opens with a high school shooting in which ten kids are killed and a bunch wounded. As a plot device, this one gets your attention and rubs your nose in the sometimes awfulness and often emptiness of relationships. The book is organized around the shooting the shooting, the investigation into the shooting, the trial and the verdict, with lots of flashbacks.
The real story is about the backstory of the shooter and one of the students who survived plus their moms. I felt that the author did a first rate job developing these characters and sharing their pain. Each of these characters is written in three dimensions, you can see their struggles and ultimately their acceptance.
About now you are thinking that the book is probably not something you want to read because you may be squeamish about the shooting. Get over it and read it, its an excellent book. The author takes the reader on a journey of growth and gently leads the reader to a place that is far different than expected. As I said, the book isnt about the school shooting, its about the characters and their struggles and growth. The real relationship under the microscope is friendship, it's betrayal and weird twists of fate. Romantic love is sparse in this book, most of the love is about the love mothers have for their children, even when the children turn out to not be the children of each mothers dreams.
I think it's well suited to high school and up.
Violence warning: As you would expect, in a book about a school shooting, parts can be violent. The descriptions of some of the investigation as well as some of the wounds suffered are brief, but intense. Surprisingly, more of the violence is about the bullying that goes on in school. A minor theme is domestic abuse or more correctly abuse within a relationship.
Adult situations: Yes. Some straight sex between one of the main characters and her boyfriend which is tastefully done. This is not a romance novel. Some other sexual situations occur, but they are mostly innuendo. Some adult language
When its all said and done, is this really a book suitable for teenagers? I say yes. Its no worse than prime time television show when it comes to sex, violence and adult situations, and it is certainly has less sex, violence and adult themes than a cable television channel or an NC-17 movie.
I recommend this book, very well written, very real characters and the book is not about what you think it might be about not so much a surprise as an evolution.
