I love Binchy but I think she rushed through this one. It just isn't engrossing like most of her novels.

Another great novel from Maeve Binchy! This novel is a story of sudden endings and new beginnings, of friendships forged in the face of tragedy, and of the nights of rain and stars that fall and shine over a beautiful island in a sparkling sea. In a small Greek island village, a group of travelers from around the world and the local residents they encounter are brought together in unexpected ways when sudden tragedy strikes.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I haven't swapped my copy because I have been loaning it to my friends. It is set in Greece which is unusual for this author. I hated for the book to end and felt like I was a part of the story.

Another Maeve Binchy book. She cannot write a poor book! The story of several vacationers and how they come together in Greece and how they react to one another and to the townspeople and become a "family" of their own. Problems seem similar across the board for people who cannot recognize the same thing in themselves. They learn from one another and it's a feel good book. A very easy read. Keeps your interest. You'll like it.

Maeve Binchy as we have come to know and love her---characters you will never forget, places you think you were and want to return to...Fiona, the misguided nurse and Shawn her misbegoten beau, Vonni who left Ireland 30 yrs ago to live on this lyrical Greek island and now stays because she has become one with it...Thomas, David and Elsa, tourists whose lives are changed forever by their visit to Aghia Anna...Andreas and Georgi, brothers who are native islanders. Everyone has a story and you'll love them all with their foibles and triumphs. Enjoy reading this now and planning someday to visit your very own Aghia Anna.

Takes place in a Greek village. A handful of tourists are thrown together by a tradegy that they observe. They become friends - and sometimes more - as they all reexamine their lives. Good escapist book - has a wish-I-was-there factor.

by MAEVE BINCHY. In a Greek taverna, high over the small village of Aghia Anna, four people meet for the first time: Fiona, an Irish nurse, Thomas, a Californian academic; Elsa, a German television presenter; and David a shy English boy. Along with Andreas, the old man who runs the taverna, they become close to each other after witnessing a tragedy when a pleasure steamer catches fire in the harbour. NIGHTS OF RAIN AND STARS is the story of one summer when Fiona, Thomas, Elsa and David all have to face the particular life crisis which first made them leave their homes and end up in Greece. With the help of Vonni, a middle-aged Irish woman who lives in the village and is now a near-native, they each find a solution - although not necessarily the one they anticipated

Mauve Binchy has a way of bringing all her characters to life. We all know them in some form in our own lives. She touches on topics that are dear to us all. This story takes place in a small town in Greece. She brings a group of strangers together with a group of local citizens and links their lives with life changing decisions. A lovely description of Greece and the people who live there. Makes one want to visit. This is one of my favorites books by Binchy. It's a bit more uplifting than some of hers and makes for a great read.

I absolutely love Maeve Binchy. She introduced me to Ireland and stirred my love for its verdant green hillsides even before I fo und out that I have rich Irish blood running thru my veins. She is the consummate story teller and I have loved every story that I have read about her including this one which tells the story of 4 strangers that meet in a small tourist town in Greece and the summer that they share along with the residents of the town. It also shows how people can become f riends in the face of tragedy no matter how diverse thier backgrounds.

From Publishers Weekly
Four strangers cross paths in a tiny Greek seaside village in this thin but engaging new novel by bestselling Binchy (Quentins; Circle of Friends). When tragedy strikes the smalltown of Aghia Anna in the form of a devastating fire on a tourist pleasure boat24 people are killedelderly barkeeper Andreas and craft-shop owner Vonni find themselves host to a random assortment of travelers who watch the conflagration from Andreas's taverna. There is Elsa, the German beauty who is trying to flee from love; David, the quiet young Englishman whose demanding father wants him to go into the family business; Thomas, the American professor who struggles to share his son with his ex-wife's new husband; and Fiona, the Irish nurse who follows her abusive boyfriend despite the warnings of her friends and family. As these strangers become friends, the mysterious Vonni, an Irish woman whose Greek is fluent and whose respected position in town is unquestioned, explores her own memories of heartache, as does Andreas. Unwilling to see their new friends repeat their mistakes, Andreas and Vonni set out to influence the hearts of this motley bunch of foreigners before they leave the village.

This was a nice, light read but nothing spectacular. Four strangers from different parts of the world travel to a remote Greek island running away from their problems. They end up meeting and helping each other with their troubles along with the assistance of several local folk who seem to be more than happy to interfere. I loved the setting of the Greek island but overall the story was predictable and boring. I've enjoyed Ms. Binchy's books in the past but this one did not do it for me.

In a small Greek island village, local residents and a group of international travelers are brought together by sudden tragedy, in a story of friendship, dreams, fears, and complicated relationships forever altered by their shared experiences. I would think of this book as the best of Binchy so far. I love her characters and how they helped each other with their problems. The story was very engaging. Her descriptions made me feel like I was on the island along with the characters. Looking forward to reading the next Binchy book and I would highly recommend this one to those who love to read about relationships.
