After enjoying the TV movies starring Tom Selleck as Paradise MA police chief Jesse Stone, I discovered that there was a series of novels on which the movies were based. Even more appealing, the series was written by the same author who inspired the long-running TV series "Spencer for Hire." So I had to try this first book in the series. I heard Tom Selleck's voice and realized what a great job he did portraying Parker's character on screen. Now I'm even more eager to read the rest of the series and see more of the movies. Well written, very fast-paced (I read the book today!) and a solid credible plot.

If you missed the origin of Parker's "new" hero, Jesse Stone, chief of police in Paradise, Massachusetts, this is where it begins. As usual, Parker is witty, suspenseful and dark in turns, all leading to a late-night page-turner.

Meet Jesse Stone, who has left the LAPD in disgrace. Hired because he was drunk at the interview the town bigwigs get more than they bargained for in Stone. Very good read.

Night Passage is the 1st of the Jesse Stone books. Jesse is a burned out, semi-alcoholic, recently divorced LA homicide detective who accepts a job as Chief of Police for the small, cozy town of Paradise, Massachusetts. He is an experienced law enforcement officer of very few words. As he himself says, "I never got in trouble for saying too little."

If you like "series-books" this is a good one to start!

This is the first of the "Jesse Stone" series and it seems to have been written with Tom Selleck in mind. Having seen the TV Movies with him playing the Jesse character, it is easy to see him in the novel!

I like this series by Parker, maybe even better than the Spenser books.

Good plot, interesting characters, fast read, but too much sex for me. Just another book which tries to convince us every woman is a slut.

Jesse Stone might be an acoholic but he has the best instincts a cop could have---first in the series of Jesse Stone and a good series to keep up to the last one.

I learned a lot about alcoholic behaviors and I admire the way the author wove the mystery. Not your typical who done it.

Jesse Stone is fired from the LAPD because of his alcoholism, and he is hired as the new sherrif of Paradise, MA, despite a drunken interview (or perhaps because of it). Newly divorced Jesse heads across the country to Paradise and soon discovers the irony of the town's name, while town leaders begin to worry about what they had thought would be the "right" choice for new sherrif. A thoughtful, literate book, Night Passage is the first of Robert Parker's new series with Jesse Stone.

I did enjoy Jesse Stone, my only problem was the swearing. Jesse is an interesting character, has flaws, but is overall a good guy. The pace kept you turning pages.

"The author of the bestselling Spenser novels introduces a new hero...meet Jesse Stone, who has left the LAPD in disgrace and found himself the new chief of police in Paradise, Massachusetts - a town that's a lot less idyllic than it sounds..."

This is another excellent book by Robert B. Parker - lots of suspense. I really enjoyed it.

Jesse Stone has left the LAPD behind and carried the burden of a recent divorce and a drinking problem cross-country to Paradise, Masschusetts. He is offered the job of police chief there--much to his surprise, since he was drunk at the interview. He soon finds out why, when he's caught between corrupt town leaders, a local militia group, and a murderer on the loose.
But Stone just might surprise his bosses--and do the job he was hired to do. Because he may have left his entire life behind in California. But he didn't leave his soul.

I read book 2 in the series first. Knew I had to read this one to organize all the threads. Really enjoyed both of them and will continue to read the rest of them. Great lead character.

a jesse stone novel - 1st in the series and very good - its about a LA homicide detective who after the break up of his marriage becomes an alcholic and gets fired - he is interviewed and accepted for a job in a very small town in massachusetts as a police chief - he wonders why they would hire someone who was drunk on the interview - he realizes that all is not as it seems - lots of small town secrets that are known to everyone but no one is willing to share - the town council figures that since he is a drunk he will be maleable to hiding or unwilling to investigate - the secrets and the criminals are threatening to explode as jesse investigates - very fast paced an easy read - in some ways better than the later spenser novels

I liked the book but don't care for the blasemphy used so frequently in it. I don't like taking the Lord's name in vain and this book does it a great deal. As far as the story, it was good and I love the Jesse Stone movies with Tom Selleck. I acturally think I liked the movie better than the book which is unusual, its usually the other way around. If I had not seen the movies first, I probably would not have gotten the book, not sure I'll get the next one.
