This book misses the mark on so many fronts. I cannot imagine a detective living on the beach in a tent. Renee Ballard admonishes citizens to 'stay safe' and does this illogical thing; it is stupid. She is not an interesting character. The conflict that she has with her superior officer (Olivas) is totally uninteresting.

I feel that the reason the author keeps talking about Harry's health is that he is getting ready to kill him off, but I don't feel Ballard is an interesting enough character to carry the stories in the future. I've heard Michael Connelly interviewed and he mentioned that he was looking to end the Harry Bosch stories. Of course, that was before he started putting the stories on television.

The Harry Bosch stories are targeted novels and this split into various side cases was not as interesting. I am very disappointed in the meandering around with the side cases. Also, Harry Bosch getting into the lawyer's building (near the end) was unrealistic. I also did not like that Ballard refused to turn in the illegal women to ICE. She is supposed to be a guardian of the law, not a renegade, self-appointed arbiter of the law. I'm not interested in authors instructing me with 'woke' characters.
