I thought this book started off slowly, and, at first, I had a hard time seeing the appeal of the heroine(Alys) because she seemed to be flighty and immature. Over the course of the book, though, she grew on me. The characters in the book journey to London to meet King Edward, where the hero (Piers) wants to present his case to the king for claiming his natural father's estate. Their journey is treacherous since his half brother and his stepmom are trying to kill him and prevent him from seeing the king. A further complication is that Piers battles an infection and illness and Alys has to care for him. Piers and Alys's trip helped me see more to Alys and understand how the two of them could be a good couple. Turned out to be a good story with a lot of adventure involved. I look forward to reading the next book, which is about the middle sister. This first book introduced some mysteries about the family and their lack of allegiance to King Edward that I'd like to learn more about. I think these issues will be brought to light and resolved eventually in the other books in the series.
