Read it in one day on a very stormy day--a little simplistic. I liked the characters and sort of liked the book, but found myself wanting more..but what of? Not sure.

The main plot line of We Never Asked for Wings is Mexican immigration into the United States - both legal and illegal. Issues that work out too neatly and many sub-plots make this story difficult to engage with, but the writing creates some engaging characters and a wonderfully visualized setting. I didn't love this one, but I look forward to Vanessa Diffenbaugh's next book.

Letty is a struggling single mother of a 15 year old and a 6 year old. She had dreams once but put them aside when she was a pregnant 18 year old. Now her parents have moved back to Mexico and she is trying to find a way to be a better parent and improve their situation. Enter new man she works with. and enter her son's father and old high school boyfriend who has been out of the picture until now. Her son, another smart kid stuck on the wrong side of the tracks, is also grappling with how to improve his life. And his girlfriend is a crippled illegal alien. Great story but even better characters. Flawed, not perfect, but you really feel for all of these characters. Full of emotion.
