Not an easy read, but fascinating. It haunted me so much that 3 months later I went back & read it again, slowly, to make sure I understood the science on which this science fiction story is based. Bakker also has a lovely way with words, which I was able to notice the second time through!

What a strange yet compelling book! Part sci-fi, part thriller, part horror, it is hard to categorize but a true page-turner. There are moments that are intensely horrifying, both in terms of action and of implication. For those readers (like me) who are not scientists, there's enough explanation to keep you following the action without slowing the pace. From beginning to end, each time you think you have it all figured out, there's another credible plot twist to skew your perception yet again. I can't say I always enjoyed the experience of reading this, yet found myself playing the "one more chapter" game every time I picked it up.

This is not the type of book I usually read, but I'm glad I gave it a try; I suspect it will be in my mind for quite a while.
