As a retired Marine I was aware of most aspects of the battle for Guadalcanal and was even aware of most of the naval battles but didn't realize that the Navy had more casualties than the Marines during the battle.
Hornfischer's account is as gripping as was his writing on the Destroyers during the fighting around Leyte later in the war. He is rapidly becoming one of my favorite historians.
