A midwife yearns to become a surgeon is the premise, and the early story is very good. But then she leaves for the civil war fields and that is when the story comes truly alive for me. I thought I knew a lot about the medical aspects and lack thereof of that war, but the intimacy of the battle wounded and dying, the agony of the soldiers and the frustration of those trying to help, was stunning in its detail. At times I was almost breathless while listening, and wondered how I could have known all of this, and yet, not be affected like I was listening to this book. I imagine it was the skill of this author and definitely the skill of the wonderful narrator.
