This is quite possibly the funniest book I have ever read. If you are feeling down and you think nothing can perk you up, try reading Naked, and I promise, you'll be laughing within minutes.

I liked it; it's hard to believe that someone with as much lack of direction, and who has had so many near misses with disaster has manged to create as much of a career as Sedaris has.
I thought his bio would be funnier -- that's what the back cover copy would have you believe -- but while there are certainly many funny moments, there's a lot of nail biting, too. It doesn't make the book bad, but it didn't hit my expectations, either. So I'm left with an odd feeling about it.

I got so many crazy looks when I would read this book at work on my lunch break. I laughed out loud and everyone thought I was crazy!

Hilarious, amazing, scary, sad: Sedaris' life with OCD, a bizarre Greek grandmother, his first job at a mental institution, summer camp in Athens, hitchhiking experiences from silly to life-threatening, and the diagnosis of a parent's cancer. My favorite is C.O.G., A coming of age story of Sedaris working strange jobs with even stranger people on the west coast.

I love David Sedaris but this book was not my favorite. I was expecting to read a series of hilarious stories from his life but most of the essays in this book were very personal. I guess that's why the title is "Naked" because this book reveals much about the author. If you're looking for humor, pick any of the other David Sedaris books because they will all have you laughing out loud. If you're looking less for humor and more for understanding him better, this is the book for you.

David Sedaris has a unique voice: part petulance, a little whiny, but completely honest about himself. And always very, very funny! In "Naked" Sedaris presents himself, in this set of memoirs drawing from his childhood onward, as full of insecurities (spending a week at a nudist resort reveals just one of these) and being at the mercy of his sarcastic, wise-cracking chain-smoking mother, siblings who compete with him for her attention, and a father who frequently embarrasses him. But he recognizes the absurdity even the most embarrassing situations, and makes the reader laugh.

The author is painfully honest which leads to some dark humor. I didn't care for some of the short stories, but others had me laughing out loud and reading lines to whomever was near because I couldn't keep it too myself.

Be prepared if ordering ISBN 0316779490 though, the publisher used it for the oversized high quality PAPERBACK edition of the book AND the hardcover that they released at the same time. So, you never know which version you will get when ordering through PaperBack Swap. You will still get the same great stories which is all that really matters.

David Sedaris is always great. This book made me laugh out loud from start to finish. His anecdotes about his crazy family and growing up in a household that was religious to the point of ridiculousness never failed to entertain. My boyfriend and I read it together and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Praise for the quick wit and humor David Sedaris used throughout the entire book! Shocking, hillarious, sad and heartwarming all at the same time. This is one author that I would love to know personally. His humor and story telling make this a smash hit with this reader!

This was the first David Sedaris book that I ever read, and it still makes me laugh every time I read it. This one includes a lot about his childhood and family, which I think make up his best stories. This one also has a more serious side than some of his others. I really enjoyed it and I am anxious for a new book to be released! I know he is working on one, so I hope the wait isn't too much longer!
Laugh-out loud funny in places, tear-welling in others. David's recollections of his strange family and challenging childhood evokes sympathy and laughter. Pulls no punches; not recommended for those who might be easily offended as there is a lot here to offend. But his honesty cuts to the core and is a breath of fresh air.

This is well written, but I was expecting it to be funnier. It's actually deeper than I expected.
I enjoy his writing very much. I found this collection of essays to be humerous although not as sidesplitting as "Me Talk Pretty One Day."

Sidesplitting. That's what one of the reviews on the back says and I really can't capture it better than that. Interesting portraits of the author's family life in this one. Sometimes sad, but always hysterically funny.
A collection of memoir-based vignettes, all written with Sedaris' wry and cynical outlook. They are, to my taste, amusing rather than laugh-out-loud funny because of the often sad truth underlying the topics.

I was not impressed at all with Sedaris's collection of essays about his life... am I the only one? Though it is touted to be full of laughs, I found nothing funny about the stories. An alcholic mother, an angry father, strange siblings, Sedaris's struggle with OCD... just not my idea of funny.
I know these reviews are for 'impressions only,' but you can really only get the full effect of david sedaris if you listen to him read his own work, which he does on the audio cassette of this book. I highly recommend it. The title essay refers to a week that he spent in a nudist colony/trailer park and is really funny...a commentary on how hung up we all are about our bodies and our looks. Even more thought-provoking is the first essay, "A plague of tics," in which DS describes his early childhood during which he had obsessive compulsive disorder, complete with physical tics and very odd behaviors. His teacher's reaction to these displays of compulsively licking the light switch (and her subsequent visit to his home to meet with his mother) are wonderful and tender. Read it or listen to it...it's worth the point(s)!
