This is a short, but exciting and emotional story, set during the Civil War in New York City. The story takes place during the draft riots initially instigated by the practice of wealthy men buying their way out of the draft. This insult to the poor was compounded by the fact that although immigrants were required to abide by the draft, freedmen were not. I think the author portrayed this historic situation with the forthrightness required.
Against this background of unrest and rioting, we read the sweet story of Rose, a poor Irish girl, whose day-to-day efforts are mainly concerned with caring for her family in the aftermath of her mothers death. Amidst her struggle, there is the challenging possibility of a future with one of two men vying for her attention. Rose is torn between grabbing the brass ring and following her heart.
The real heroes in this story, though, are the ones who disregard the common mores of the city and culture around them to save a child.
I love this story and recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good romance encased by authentic history.
