The boy in question was 15, older than the children Hayden usually worked with, and she wasn't inclined to start working with him, to begin with. When she did, the results were miraculous, but also very frightening...

One of Torey's very best. It's not set in a classroom like most of her other stories. It is a very intensive study of one particular child and the lengths she went through to reach him. Torey Hayden has a way of making you care about all of her kids, no matter how disturbed they may be and that's a gift. I always end up rooting for Torey and her kids when I read the books. This book will keep you interested and fascinated.

Another great read by Torey Hayden--this one about an adolescent who refuses to speak. When he does, finally, what he has to say is hair-raising. Just like the rest of her books, this one is fascinating and engaging, incredibly hard to put down.

This book pulls you in. I read it in two days. Story is very sad and frustrating at times but well worth the tears. Torey Hayden is my all time favorite author. Front of books says He was a frightened boy who refused to speak until a teacher's love broke through the silence.

This was an amazing book written by an amazing teacher. Torey works wonders with the troubled children she deals with.
And she has such a knack for writing about them that gives readers books that are very hard to put down before the end. I have read almost all of her books now, and have only been disappointed once.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves real stories about real kids with real issues.
A very humbling book, when you see what these kids go through in the struggle to survive.
