In 1977, two remarkable spacecraft named Voyager were launched. After exploring Jupiter and Saturn they will slowly leave our solar system and cruise for eons through the realms of other stars. Affixed to each is a gold-plated phonograph record, a message from Earth to possible extraterrestrials. The record contains 118 pictures of our planet and ourselves, greetings in 54 languages, and a representative sampling of the sounds of Earth from a rocket launching to an avalanche to kissing and 90 minutes of music.
In this book, those responsible for making the records explain how and why they did it and what they feel the record says, not only to extraterrestrials but to ourselves in the late 20th century.
