This is a hard series to classify - set in turn of the century NYC, midwife Sarah Brandt is from a high society wealthy family but has chosen to strike out on her own - marrying the man of her choice and after his death, supporting herself. Historically accurate, the books are all well written and sometimes stark in their portrayal of women's roles (and even men's) during the time period. Her relationship with Det Sgt Mallory plays up the ethnic prejudices of the day ("the Irish") and the hardships of the working class (in this book particularly). The characters are well drawn, the book is well written and well plotted, but anyone thinking this is a pleasant little cozy would be mistaken - reality abounds. Great series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Gaslight Series! A good read, a good mystery and a good story. The two main characters, Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy, seemed to unfold in their development. You learned a little bit more about them, their families and their lives. Although I figured out "who done it" fairly early on, it didn't detract from my enjoyement of the book - I still didn't want to put it down!

This is a great book, got me into the Victorian Mysteries that I like so much now. The synopsis from the back: "As a midwife in the turn-of-the-century tenements of New York City, Sarah Brandt has seen suffering and joy, birth and death-and even murder. And the crime-ridden streets of the teeming city offer little relief from either..."

This is an exciting, well researched historical mystery. The characters are real and interaction between them is easily believed. The plot is well intertwined to led the reader to a conclusion that may not be at all correct, thus making the book more interesting. All in all it is a good series and a good read.
