I can almost give Ann Cleeves 5 stars without reading the book. But then I'd miss her modern take on the British village mystery and that would be a shame. In this one, old Mrs. Parry is murdered in her own backyard on a bitter cold night. Who? More important, Why? Everyone loved the helpful Alice. Or so they tell detective Stephen Ramsay.
