Read this in my thirties, found it sad, even depressing to the point that I have avoided re-reading it as I have other Taylor's.

Now in my middle ixties found it very funny, quite delightful!

Mrs. Palfrey, a lonely widow, goes to finish her years in a residential hotel in London. Her married daughter in Scotland is uninterested, her grandson in London doesn't answer her invitations, but a young impecunious writer she meets by accident becomes a very dear, if unreliable friend.

Virtually every page took my breath away with its insight, wit and original observation. Taylor here was at the height of her unigue powers.
